# Cross-fitted categorical longitudinal TMLE This study validates five-fold longitudinal TMLE with three labelled treatment levels at two nodes. It covers the same deterministic plans as the ordinary study. The comparison uses R [`lmtp`](https://github.com/nt-williams/lmtp) 1.5.4 at commit `f04a2b4`. Both implementations receive the exact rowwise folds and the exact assigned-arm probabilities. Each fold runs an untargeted backward regression sequence on its training rows and predicts only its matching held-out rows. One pooled fluctuation per node then targets those out-of-fold predictions over every follower. The [cross-fitting section](../longitudinal-tmle.md#cross-fitting-the-recursion) of the technical reference gives the construction. The pinned comparator runs a different targeting step. `lmtp` 1.5.4 fits each fold's fluctuation on that fold's training rows and carries it into the fold's next regression. Upstream `lmtp` commit [`9996b04`](https://github.com/nt-williams/lmtp/commit/9996b04dcbb3ae0b1ef8862097c36d95e9f2fcf9) classifies that update as a bug. Each paired margin stays as registered, so each paired verdict compares two constructions. ## What was compared | setting | `cleverly` | R `lmtp` | | --- | --- | --- | | datasets | complete binary-outcome samples generated in Python | the identical rows | | treatment | three string-labelled levels at each of two nodes | the identical labelled columns | | plans | three constant plans, one mixed plan, and one dynamic plan | the same shifted columns | | mechanism | the exact categorical probability for the assigned arm | the same exact per-node density ratios | | folds | one declared balanced five-fold assignment | the identical rowwise assignment | | sequential regressions | fold-specific untargeted quasibinomial regressions | fold-specific `SL.glm` regressions | | targeting | one pooled fluctuation per node over every follower | a fluctuation on each fold's training rows, carried into that fold's next regression | | intervals | pointwise 95% identity-scale Wald intervals | the same influence-curve intervals | ## The paired verdicts also compare the pooled update with the training-fold fluctuation of `lmtp` 1.5.4 | | The property fits use saturated discrete-cell learners | Their efficiency claim applies to this finite-support law | | One fixed five-fold assignment is studied | Fold repeats and time-respecting splits are excluded | | Inference is pointwise 95% Wald | Simultaneous bands and bootstrap intervals are excluded. The [default-band study](default-simultaneous-bands.md) measures the default band of this study's subject fit, and that cell is red. | | Plans are deterministic | Survival and competing risks are different parameters | | The design is independent and unweighted | Weights and clusters are excluded | The causal interpretation requires consistency, sequential exchangeability, and longitudinal positivity. Single-correct-nuisance cells establish consistency, not calibrated inference. ## Reproduction The [fixture README](https://github.com/esbraun/cleverly-tmle/blob/main/tests/canonical/categorical_ltmle_crossfit/README.md) gives the regeneration command. The [manifest](https://github.com/esbraun/cleverly-tmle/blob/main/tests/canonical/categorical_ltmle_crossfit/manifest.json) records the seeds, pins, source hashes, and artifact hashes.
